In this message, we begin Lent by following Jesus into the wilderness. Some wilderness seasons feel chosen. Others feel like they choose us. Either way, Scripture shows that the desert is not mainly punishment. It is formation. Using Israel’s exodus as the template for salvation, we explore why God often leads his people into a stretch of testing and preparation after rescue. The wilderness is where God strips away the false coverings we use to manage shame, the comforts we cling to for security, and the “pennies” we refuse to release, so that he can heal what is actually broken. We talk about sanctification as a kind of spiritual detox, what it means to trust God in silence, and why Jesus’ faithfulness in the wilderness and on the cross becomes our victory when we are tempted to reach for idols again. The question at the center of it all is one Jesus asks every disciple: What do you want? If you are in a wilderness season, or trying to avoid one, this is an invitation to let God do his deeper work and to receive the love that finally covers our shame. Scripture referenced: Matthew 4:1; Exodus (wilderness pattern); Genesis 3; John 1 (“What do you want?”); John 19 (Jesus and shame); plus themes connected to Lent, Good Friday, and Easter.
