The Revealing Work of Jesus

Play episode

Revelation 1:1–2 says, “The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.”

Here, Jesus is the one doing the revealing (subjective genitive). The object of the revelation is “the things that must soon take place.”

Jesus, then, is the revealer. Revealing is an essential ministry of Jesus. Jesus reveals the Father (Jn. 14:9), he reveals things that are hidden (Lk. 8:17), and he reveals what humanity was also supposed to be.

Fallen humanity (i.e., the “Adam race”) is bent inward. It is corrupted by sin. Because of sin entering into the world, we don’t have a clear picture of what humans were supposed to be as image bearers.

When Christ takes on flesh, he is not only the incarnate deity, he is also the true human; he is Adam as Adam was always supposed to be.
