Thomas' Confession

Caravaggio_-_The_Incredulity_of_Saint_Thomas

“My Lord and my God!” What a statement for Thomas, or any person for that matter, to make.  I find the occasion for Thomas’ confession of Jesus’ divinity interesting. Of all the time that Thomas spent by Jesus’ side while he taught, healed and even raised people from the dead, we never once hear Thomas openly and unreservedly confess the divinity of Jesus.  Perhaps up until this moment, Thomas wasn’t entirely sure about Jesus identity. Jesus’ claims about himself were clear.

What about this event occasioned Thomas’ open declaration of Jesus as “My God!”? Was it the fact that Jesus was unquestionably dead just two days before and now standing before Thomas? Did Thomas finally understand Jesus’ sacrificial love?  What was it that “clicked” in Thomas that made him finally see that Jesus was God himself?

I’m not sure we can answer this question about Thomas reaction. What we can do, however, is ask ourselves if we have, in fact, personally experienced the person of Jesus in such as to be able to freely say “My Lord, and my God!” in response to his presence. When have you stood in the presence of Jesus and made this confession? Such a confession is necessary for our salvation!

We have an opportunity to touch God himself.  And when we hold the hand of God, we’re able to feel the wound of his sacrifice.
