In One Word: Humility

Play episode

I had a great chat today with a friend. The conversation started with my asking about the four months that he spent in Indonesia. He said that if he had to describe his experience in one word it would be, “humbling”.

“I went there with the idea that I would make a substantial impact and leave Indonesia forever changed for the better. I thought I had lots to offer.”

Humility is a key instrument that God uses to shape us into his image. We must get ourselves into places that we will come away being humbled. Humbling experiences, more than anything else, cut through toxic ego and pride. Very few experiences shape us more than those that make us walk away saying, “I have nothing to offer.”

We all know that there is more to it than this, however, the reality is that we do have something to offer, but it’s only that which the Holy Spirit gives us.
