Exposing Pseudo-Scholarship: Wes Huff’s Debate with Billy Carson

Second Timothy 4:3–4 says, “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

Billy Carson is the embodiment of the type of false teachers that Paul predicted.

In a recent debate, Christian apologist and scholar Wes Huff engaged with Billy Carson, a self-proclaimed expert in ancient texts and alternative histories. The exchange has garnered significant attention, with many viewers asserting that Huff effectively exposed Carson’s pseudo-scholarship and fraudulent claims.

The Debate Overview

The debate, which has been widely discussed across various platforms, centered on topics such as the authenticity of biblical texts, historical accuracy, and interpretations of ancient manuscripts. Huff, known for his rigorous academic background and expertise in biblical studies, challenged Carson’s assertions with well-researched evidence and critical analysis.

Key Moments Highlighting Carson’s Pseudo-Scholarship

  1. Questionable Sources: Huff scrutinized Carson’s reliance on dubious sources, pointing out instances where Carson cited texts widely regarded by scholars as forgeries or lacking credibility. This approach undermined Carson’s arguments and called into question the validity of his claims.
  2. Enuma Elish and Genesis Parallels: One particular area close to my own heart and even my scholarly research on holiness in the OT, is the segment of the debate where Carson claims that Genesis word-for-word quotes the Enuma Elish (the ancient Babylonia creation myth contemporary with the Genesis account). As is obvious in the video, Billy cannot substantiate his claim because it is simply not true. In fact, while there are parallels between the EE and Genesis 1–2, scholars have long noted that the parallels are the result of the accepted fact that Genesis is a polemic AGAINST the Enuma Elish (rather than, as Billy suggests, simply a plagiarized version of it). As Wes brilliantly points out, the point of Genesis 1–2 is to highlight the transcendence (i.e., holiness) of God as opposed to the Babylonian worldview that was not only polytheistic, but understood that the pantheon of deities were continuous with the material world, not independent from them. I wanted to jump through the screen. Billy was so INCREDIBLY incorrect about his claims about the Enuma Elish. Thanks, Wes. For more on this topic, read this.
  3. Misinterpretation of Texts: Throughout the debate, Huff identified several instances where Carson misinterpreted or misrepresented ancient texts (e.g., the claim that the Bible teaches that God is male). By providing accurate translations and contextual explanations, Huff demonstrated Carson’s lack of understanding and especially scholarly rigor.
  4. Evasion of Direct Questions: Observers noted that Carson often evaded direct questions posed by Huff, opting instead to divert the conversation or provide vague responses. This tactic revealed an inability to substantiate his claims under scrutiny; something that a true scholar is either able to do, or admit their ignorance in a particular area. Carson did neither because Carson is not a scholar.

Public Reaction and Aftermath

The debate’s impact extended beyond the immediate exchange. Following the event, it emerged that Carson attempted to have the debate footage removed from various platforms, leading to discussions about transparency and accountability in public discourse. Carson even threatened to sue Huff for publishing footage of the debate. Commentators and viewers have criticized Carson’s actions, interpreting them as a clear effort to conceal his inadequate performance.

Conclusion

Wes Huff’s engagement with Billy Carson serves as a compelling example of the importance of scholarly integrity and the necessity of critically evaluating claims, especially those that challenge established historical and theological understandings. The debate underscores the value of informed dialogue and the need to confront misinformation with evidence-based arguments.
